Villa Bougainville is within walking distance of the village of Salernes. Salernes is a charming Provençal village beautifully located in the heart of the Var, surrounded by rolling hills and extensive vineyards. This picturesque village is known for its rich history of ceramics and tile production, evident in the colorful tiles adorning many homes. However, Salernes offers much more than just artisanal traditions; it is the ideal destination for nature lovers, wine enthusiasts, and culture seekers.
A Paradise for Nature Lovers
Just a stone’s throw from Salernes are the stunning waterfalls of Sillans-la-Cascade, a must-see for anyone who loves nature. The 42-meter-high waterfall cascades into an emerald-green basin, surrounded by lush forest. It is a magical place where you can hike and enjoy the tranquil beauty of nature.
In addition, Salernes is also ideally located near the world-renowned Gorges du Verdon, the largest canyon in Europe. This spectacular gorge, with its turquoise waters and steep cliffs, offers numerous activities such as kayaking, swimming, hiking, or simply enjoying the breathtaking views. It is one of the natural wonders of Provence and an absolute must for adventurers.
Wine, Wine, and More Wine
The region around Salernes is also a paradise for wine lovers. The rolling hills are dotted with sprawling vineyards and prestigious wine châteaux. For instance, visit Château de Berne, a beautiful wine estate with a luxury hotel and restaurant, where you can taste their refined wines and enjoy the serene surroundings. Another must-visit is Château Thuerry, known for its exceptional red wines and modern architecture. Château Valcolombe is also highly recommended for a wine tasting; here you can enjoy local rosé wines that perfectly match the Mediterranean climate. This is a lovely family-owned estate with excellent wines, not far from the villa.
The Vibrant Weekly Market
No visit to a Provençal village is complete without a trip to the local market, and the weekly market in Salernes certainly does not disappoint. Every Sunday, the village comes alive with stalls filled with local products: fresh fruits and vegetables, fragrant herbs, cheeses, olives, and of course, delicious Provençal wines. You can also find artisanal products like ceramics and handmade soap. The market is not only a place to shop but also a chance to experience the village’s atmosphere and chat with the friendly locals.
Why Salernes?
Salernes is a village that offers the perfect mix of nature, culture, and gastronomy. It is a place where you can unwind amidst beautiful landscapes, immerse yourself in the Provençal lifestyle, and enjoy the authentic flavors of the region. Whether you want to hike by the waterfalls, explore the grandeur of the Gorges du Verdon, or treat yourself to a wine tasting at one of the nearby châteaux, Salernes has something for everyone. And if you unexpectedly feel like a day at the beach, it’s just an hour away in places like Fréjus or St. Maxime.
